As a parent, you dream of seeing your child succeed in a competitive job market, ideally globally. Universities abroad have long been associated with prestigious qualifications and exposure to diverse cultures. However, sending your child halfway across the world for higher education comes with a hefty price tag, complex visa processes, and the emotional challenge of separation.
This series of articles by ESOFT Metro Campus, Sri Lanka’s leading higher education provider, is designed to help you make informed decisions about securing a globally recognised degree for your child, right here in Sri Lanka.
The Value of a Global Degree:
In today’s interconnected world, the allure of internationally recognised qualifications is undeniable, promising practical knowledge, up-to-date curricula, and the invaluable asset of global recognition. However, as with any significant decision, there are factors to consider, hurdles to navigate, and alternatives to explore.
Pros of Pursuing a Foreign Degree
The advantages of foreign degrees are undeniable. They offer curricula crafted to meet the demands of today’s dynamic industries. They ensure that students are equipped with practical skills and globally relevant knowledge. However, what appeals to most people is the prestige associated with internationally recognised qualifications, which opens doors to many career opportunities worldwide Other benefits include being part of an institution renowned for their cutting-edge research and cultural immersion that fosters personal growth.
Cons to Contemplate:
Yet, the path to obtaining a foreign degree has many challenges. Foremost among them is the significant financial investment required. The high tuition fees, accommodation, and living expenses can often make the prospect seem unattainable. Additionally, the complicated visa application processes and adapting to new environments can be daunting, particularly for students accustomed to the comforts of home and the care of loved ones. The absence of familial support compounds the difficulty, leaving young scholars to balance the complexities of independent living and academic rigour alone.
Transnational Education (TNE) is a Smart Alternative
Transnational Degrees offer a cost-effective and flexible alternative to traditional overseas education. TNE provisions have gained popularity in Sri Lanka, with British qualifications leading as the most sought-after, followed closely by Australian programs. The advantage lies in allowing students to pursue their aspirations without international relocation.
TNE Reduces the Financial Burden
The ability to obtain foreign degrees at a fraction of the traditional cost also presents TNE as a more pragmatic approach. To put it into perspective, according to the British Council website, international undergraduate course fees in the UK range from £11,400 to £38,000 per year depending on the course. Students must also factor in living expenses in addition to the course fees, of approximately £900 to £1,400 per month, covering accommodation, bills, groceries, and other necessities. Similarly, in Canada, course fees range from $10,000 to $30,000 per year, while Australian universities demand fees ranging from $15,000 to $33,000 per annum on average.
In contrast, TNE programs offer a more manageable financial pathway to obtaining internationally recognised degrees. By opting for locally delivered franchised degrees or pursuing transfer options (where students spend either one or two years in Sri Lanka before completing the remainder of their studies in the degree-awarding country), students can substantially lessen their financial burden while maintaining the quality of education. For instance, a comparable British TNE degree can be obtained in Sri Lanka under 20% of the course fee.
